Sometimes, things don't need to have a 'purpose', an 'ultimate meaning', a 'place in the grand scheme of things'....they just are. The world is a senseless and ever-changing place which cannot be explained by much of anything except that it is unexplainable.
People with altered mental states, is it so necessary to treat them as the other? Do we have distinguish between us and them? I don't mean to say that we shouldn't acknowledge their difficulties and setbacks but I mean to say, wouldn't you rather err on the side doing too much than not enough? Maybe it's stupid to talk to a person with dementia as if they weren't afflicted, or maybe, just maybe, that person understands and remembers and appreciates that thing you said, maybe not now, but maybe later on, it comes back to them, just like all of those other memories of the 'good old days' and they'll smile to themselves and remember how much the people in this world love them.
I think I'm finally starting to get it.
